Take Me to the River (catalogue essay)
By Vivienne Lassman (curator)
May 2005
[excerpt]
Jose Ruiz used the title Take Me to the River as his starting point,
allowing him to romantically explore the geography of his birth place,
Peru. Employing the Internet as his tool of navigation, he researched
the main rivers in Peru until he located online photographs of each
of these thirteen rivers. By using only computer programs, the images
were then dissected into microscopic levels - pixilated breaking points
of color and composition. Technology allows him to break the two-dimensional
picture place into indefinable depths reminiscent of the unknown spaces
contained in these bodies of water.
